Micron’s 512GB DDR5 RDIMM: What Higher Density Changes for Servers
Micron’s new 512GB DDR5 RDIMM shows how server memory density is evolving for AI, databases, virtualization, and other memory-intensive workloads.
With 24 memory slots, a dual-socket server could reach 12TB of RAM using these modules. The higher-density design allows significantly more memory capacity without increasing the number of DIMM slots, which could be useful for large in-memory datasets and AI inference workloads.
For the secondary market, higher-capacity DDR5 also means data centers upgrading to newer configurations may have large quantities of lower-capacity RDIMMs becoming available. Businesses with surplus or retired memory can evaluate the option to sell RAM and recover value from existing inventory.
