Most developers start making architectural decisions long before “architect” appears in their job title. A vague requirement needs turning into technical direction. A clean design meets a deadline, a limited budget, or a team that has to maintain it. The difficult part isn’t drawing the ideal architecture—it’s deciding what will actually survive contact with reality.

Software Architecture Decision-Making by Dominik Włodarz is written for senior developers, tech leads, staff and platform engineers, and newer architects taking on broader technical responsibility.

The book focuses on the judgment behind architecture: making trade-offs visible, choosing designs that fit the team and its constraints, knowing when “good enough” really is good enough, and keeping systems adaptable as requirements change. It also gets into practical concerns such as architecture decision records, delayed commitment, modular versus distributed monoliths, technical debt, cloud lock-in, and designing systems that can be replaced incrementally.

Four chapters are currently available through Manning’s Early Access Program, so readers can follow the book as it develops and give the author feedback along the way.
