Intel unveils a 256-core Diamond Rapids Xeon

Intel’s Diamond Rapids Xeon is shaping up to be a major next-generation server CPU, with the flagship configuration expected to reach 256 cores and 256 threads. The platform is built around Intel’s 18A process technology and is expected to use a new Xeon 7 architecture, targeting significantly higher compute density for AI, cloud, and high-performance data-center workloads.

The move to 256 cores highlights the industry’s shift toward highly parallel CPU workloads, while Diamond Rapids is also expected to bring improvements in memory bandwidth, I/O, and overall efficiency. For data-center operators, this could mean more compute capacity per server and fewer CPUs needed for heavily threaded workloads.

As new Xeon generations arrive, businesses may also have opportunities to sell CPU hardware from previous server upgrades.
