Have you discovered Meshtastic yet?

Meshtastic is a mesh networking text based communications platform using inexpensive LoRa capable devices, I believe it’s the best option currently available for unlicensed off grid communications.

Recently its become extremely popular and the node infrastructure has matured in many places, so the open source project could offer plenty of opportunities for developers and builders, if you want to learn more, check out:
