Don't Go Quietly Into the AI Night

There are two visions for the future: AI as a deity built and controlled by a small group of clergy, or humans at the center with AI as an amplifier. The future has not been decided.

The self-proclaimed “clergy” fired their shot too soon - they were too eager to eliminate workers and undermine talent - declaring quickly the end of all employment before anyone had a chance to see what this technology can do.

We’re already seeing companies like OpenAI plummet in relevance - they simply don’t matter. Open. models are catching up to frontier, people are reverse-engineering inference and model routing, people are finding shortcuts.

The application layer is proving more important than previously realized, not only in terms of UI/UX so the end user can meaningfully use the AI but also on the backend and infrastructure.

We’re learning that running the biggest, baddest, model doens’t always net the best results - that you can do quite a lot even with a locally running Mistral 7b with effective harnessing.

We’re still learning a lot - while most recent years have been focused on freeing the beast from its corporate bondage, a major creative explosion in film, games, software based on locally running models (even better, smaller models shoved into devices and browsers) can all easily make companies like OpenAI and Anthropic look like total nobodies.
