Why Server CPU Lead Times Now Run 25–30 Weeks

Server CPU availability is becoming a significant issue as lead times for some processors have stretched to 25–30 weeks. The article looks at how AI infrastructure, cloud computing, and enterprise data centers are putting additional pressure on server CPU supply.

A particularly interesting factor is the rise of AI agents such as Meta’s Muse. These systems can require dedicated compute resources for browsing, code execution, file handling, and other tasks around the AI model. The article estimates that 700,000 daily Muse users could require roughly 87,500 physical CPU cores, while a hypothetical 100 million daily users could require about 12.5 million cores—equivalent to roughly 99,000 126-core CPUs.

At the same time, newer high-core-count server processors require advanced manufacturing and packaging capacity that cannot be expanded quickly. This helps explain why CPU availability and lead times are becoming important considerations for data-center planning.

The situation also has implications for the secondary server CPU market. When new processors have long lead times or high prices, compatible used and pulled CPUs can become more relevant for organizations looking for alternatives or replacement inventory. Companies holding surplus processors may also want to evaluate current market conditions and consider whether to Sell CPU.

For data centers and IT infrastructure teams, the key issue is no longer just CPU specifications and pricing. AI-agent workloads, availability, and lead times are increasingly becoming part of the server CPU equation.
